Or if Viego attempts to posses Ascended Bel'Veth. You don't know what will happen if Ascended Yuumi hops on ally. But throwing it all to a map with different rules, makes you check every possible combination for this specific map at once, since most of these modes happened years ago. Adding champion requires checking how this specific champion reacts to being ulted by Azir or Mordekaiser. This might not be such a problem with SR, since everything keeps being there, with any changes being possibly fixed on the fly, changing one item boils down the "chaos vector" to this item and whatever interacting with it.
REDDIT LEAGUE OF LEGENDS CODE
Now every time there is a new RGM with new map, you need to check every single one of - I guess it's safe to assume - millions of combinations to make sure that your teammate playing AD Sylas with AP Yuumi Mordekaiser-ulting enemy "The Fast" Jhin won't cause code to gain self transcendence, wiping out disks in Riot servers for funnies. What we know, it's all made with SR in mind, along with HA as second permanent mode. How many of these required a map itself to support a new champion (Qiyana ult detecting walls). We don't know how it's handled and fixed by engine, how many bugfixes are made by redesigning core champion logic, or by handcrafting exceptions for specific cases. With some cases that can make it exponentially harder (Sylas, Viego). League got tons of weird interactions, between hundreds of champions, items, runes, summoner spells. And since we had Worlds with quite few bugs, that could've changed outcome of some matches, you probably know what I'm pointing at. Each one of them added a bit to code complexity. Some of them started sailing smoothly, requiring only minor tweaks, some caused headaches for long time (Azir, Viego, Mordekaiser, Sylas). We have bunch of new mechanics every few patches, either because of new champion, or item. Every time there was a mention of RGMs, the argument against was "too difficult to maintain". Tl dr - engine code possibly too complex and hard to maintain to reliably switch between maps not updated since few weeks.Īnother possible reason why everything slowed down - tech debt. I for one would absolutely play a ARPG set in Runeterra or a Roguelike though, and continue to play SR (Ranked) and ARAM. I might be in the VAST minority for this, but I do think new champs and reworks, items runes etc do make meaningful and interesting changes to the game. I don’t hate RGM or other modes that aren’t SR (I have played thousands of ARAM games and a ton of NB when it was out and love them both!) but ultimately, I return to LoL for LoL. It’s clear a lot of people aren’t here for SR, which is fine, but I think Riot should capitalize on that mass of players. Regardless I agree that Riot should look for other devs to carry out fans wishes and or make one themselves. Maybe Riots MMO will be top down PVE, or the Project game will be a rogue like with the elements of Augmenting like we had in Odyssey. at least, I hope that’s what it is/will be. It would probably be on its own client, have frequent updates etc. One of Riots named “Project” Games seems to be a top down ARPG esc kind of game which I think would satisfy a lot of people’s yearning for a PVE mode. Instead they can leverage people's nostalgia for League into trying out brand new experiences. I think Riot understands that no matter what they do, they can't make older vets who quit the game come back long-term and pretend like we're back in the heady days of S3. If the MMO is successful (and practically everything seems to be lining up for it to BE successful) then Riot might be able to keep players pinging back and forth between its various games for years to come.

Now not only is league stable and the esports scene better than ever, but Riot has been remarkably successful in diversifying the experience. Hundreds of millions wasted on projects that went nowhere and all they had was a game that seemed to be dieing.

I think Riot is headed in a really great direction with the League/Riot ecosystem.Ī few years ago when League started stagnating/declining in terms of revenue there was a lot of alarm at the company because they suddenly realized the deep shit they were in.
